Canterbury Heritage Awards – Lecture 2018
GJM Heritage is proud to be providing the keynote speaker at the Canterbury Heritage Awards 2018 Lecture, which will be held at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch, New Zealand on Thursday 14 June at 5.30pm.
Jim Gard’ner will be focussing on the theme of authenticity and the ‘Disneyfication’ of heritage in the US. Entitled ‘Fake Heritage’, it challenges Modernist architecture and New Urbanism equally and explores how America has regressed in its architectural thinking to Disneyland, Las Vegas and the ‘McMansion’. Demonstrated through changes in public taste from the mid 18th century to early 21st century he argues that mass domestic architecture post 1960/70s has increasingly taken on historicist forms paralleling the loss of cultural confidence in the US and a nostalgia for the past – in particular the mythical American town.
