GJM Heritage can assist with the preparation of Heritage Impact Statements for permit applications and advise on the heritage aspects of redevelopment projects.

A Heritage Impact Statement (HIS) is a document which considers: the heritage significance of a place; the nature of a proposed development and the likely impact of that development on the significance of the place.

For properties listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR), proponents must include an HIS with their permit application. Many local governments also encourage proponents to submit an HIS with any development proposal affecting a heritage place.

The following are recently completed redevelopment projects and projects requiring the preparation of Heritage Impact Statements:

41 ST ANDREWS PLACE, EAST MELBOURNE

The former Government Printing Office in Melbourne’s Treasury precinct has been transformed into a state-of-the-art, contemporary adult learning and teaching facility. Opened in early 2022 by former Minister for Education James Merlino, the project involved the redevelopment of the historic building into the new Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership. GJM worked closely with project architects, Design Inc, to actively manage the impact of the development on the Heritage Place and to deliver an outcome that respects and celebrates the heritage significance of the former Printing Office.

LA MAMA THEATRE

The La Mama theatre building was extensively damaged by fire in 2018.  GJM Heritage was commissioned by the La Mama Committee to provide heritage advice to assist the architects in preparing an appropriate scheme for restoring the theatre and providing new opportunities for the well-loved heritage place. GJM was n involved in all stages of the redevelopment, including the preparation of a Heritage Impact Statement and providing ongoing heritage advice throughout the life of the project.

PRIVATE PROPERTY

GJM Heritage assists owners by providing heritage input into proposed development.  Once a design is finalised, we can prepare supporting documentation that includes the preparation of an HIS to accompany either a permit application to Heritage Victoria or a planning permit application to Council.
