We have years of experience in assisting local and State government in the preparation and completion of heritage studies and assessments and in identifying and assessing places for the application of heritage controls.

Our study methodology accords with the Victorian Planning Provisions Planning Practice Note 1: Applying Heritage Overlay (August 2018) (‘PPN1’) and the principles of the ICOMOS Burra Charter 2013 (including its guidelines for identifying and assessing places).

The following are examples of Heritage studies and assessments completed or underway:

GLEN EIRA STATEMENTS OF SIGNIFICANCE REVIEW

Glen Eira City Council commissioned GJM to prepare updated Statements of Significance (SoS) for a number of properties in Elsternwick and Bentleigh. This involved a review of existing Heritage Overlay boundaries and controls, site inspections of each property, and the preparation of an updated SoS for each place, supported by a background information document which summarised the history and physical features of each heritage place.

MALVERN HERITAGE REVIEW

GJM Heritage completed the Malvern Heritage Review Project, which comprised a review of places already included in the Heritage Overlay of the Stonnington Planning Scheme within the project area and a ‘Gap Study’ of the project area to ensure the comprehensive protection of places of local heritage significance.

HODDLE GRID HERITAGE REVIEW

GJM Heritage worked in collaboration with GML (formerly Context) to prepare the Hoddle Grid Heritage Review for the City of Melbourne. This Review, considering Aboriginal, historic, contemporary, community, tangible and intangible heritage values, represented the most comprehensive review of heritage places within Melbourne’s CBD in 30 years. GJM acted as independent expert heritage consultants on the built heritage aspects of the project to ensure the comprehensive protection of places of local heritage significance.

Our collaborative effort has resulted in the inclusion of five new precincts, 75 additional individual buildings built before 1945, and 49 Postwar Modernist-style buildings on the Schedule to the Heritage Overlay.

STONNINGTON FEDERATION HOUSES HERITAGE STUDY

The City of Stonnington commissioned GJM Heritage in collaboration with Purcell to undertake Stages 2 and 3 of the Federation Houses Study. The purpose of the Study was to review a list of previously identified Federation-era residences within the municipality and to determine whether they satisfy the threshold for local heritage significance and inclusion in the Heritage Overlay of the Stonnington Planning Scheme
